In coordination with U.S. Embassy Minsk, and through its working relationship with the Belarus Basketball Federation, the Sports Diplomacy Division will host a group of fourteen male and female basketball coaches in two cities in the United States. The coaches will learn how to use basketball to build leadership and teamwork skills, and how to translate the sport into personal behaviors and positive societal influences. Participants will also learn how basketball can be used to promote inclusion for athletes with disabilities and women and girls.
This program follows the recent 2018 FIBA Under-17 Women’s Basketball World Cup that took place in July 2018 in Minsk, and capitalizes on previous post support of the construction of a 3v3 area and basketball programming. Post also cites prior Sports Diplomacy programming as effective development and diplomacy tools – not only for teaching new techniques, but for allowing Belarusians to meet and play with American peers, share best practices, and participate in volunteer activities. All of these factors can change Belarusian participants’ personal and professional outlook and instill self-confidence.
